Sylvia Auton, the former IPC chief executive who was promoted to the board of US parent company Time Inc, is returning to take charge of the UK magazine publisher.

Evelyn Webster, who succeeded Auton as IPC chief executive in January last year, is swapping jobs with her.

Webster has been promoted to the board of Time Inc as executive vice-president of its Lifestyle Division, whose titles include Real Simple and Southern Living.

Auton will return to take up her old job on 1 January 2011, returning to London from Time Inc's New York offices after two years in the US. IPC insiders said that Auton was keen to return home.

IPC publishes more than 80 titles, including NME, Nuts, Now and Chat. It was bought by Time Warner for £1.15bn in 2001 from its previous owner, venture capital company Cinven.
