Newsquest plans closure of Brighton Argus printing plant

Newsquest plans to close the printing plant for the Brighton Argus, with 53 jobs under threat.The regional newspaper company told staff today that it wants to move printing of the paper from Brighton to Southampton, 55 miles away. Affected staff are in a 30-day consultation period.Newsquest Sussex prints the Argus - formerly the Evening Argus - every Monday to Saturday and a series of free weekly Leader and Life titles across the county from a plant on the outskirts of the city.Last year Newsquest closed its printing plant in Colchester, and outsourced prepress jobs at titles in Sussex and Wiltshire to India.Prepress staff, who design ads and check editorial pages before they are sent to the printers, were told that 21 jobs will go as a result of outsourcing to a third-party supplier, Express KCS, an American company with operations in India.Last year Newsquest cut two of the company's monthly magazines, The Brighton Source, a glossy entertainment magazine covering music, clubs, fashion and food, with the loss of two editing and design jobs; and Rocks, an ethical lifestyle magazine, shut with the loss of one job.More ...
