Esquire's editor-in-chief uses technology to sell print

After all, Esquire's editor-in-chief has been hearing that doomsday is near for almost 30 years.

"I moved here in 1982, which was the last time the unemployment rate was higher than it is now," says Granger. "Everybody was like, 'you're insane to move to New York to try to get into publishing. Publishing is dying.'"

Yet here he sits at age 53, in the steel-and-glass tower that comprises Hearst Corp.'s Manhattan headquarters, at the helm of one of the country's most honored monthly magazines. Since Granger's arrival in 1997, Esquire has won 13 National Magazine Awards — the magazine equivalent of a Pulitzer Prize — all of which are prominently displayed just inside the front doors of the sleek editorial offices.
